Our Club

The Smithtown Judo Club was founded in 1961 by Sensei John Brisbois teaching traditional Kodokan Judo.  The dojo is the oldest martial arts school in all of Long Island.  During the 60's, 70's and 80's the club was a nationally known club that produced 14 individual national champions and had several of his athletes invited out to the US Olympic Training Center to try and vie for a spot on the US Olympic Judo Team.

In 1994, Sensei John Brisbois retired from teaching and turned the helm of the Adult/Competitor's program over to his most tenured student, Jean- Pierre  Lucas.  Jean-Pierre Lucas started under Sensei Brisbois in 1963, at 5 years old, and has been there ever since.

Also at the helm with Sensei Lucas is Joe Prizzi(3rd Dan) who started in 1968.

Our Philosophy

The club's focus is still on traditional Kodokan Judo as a form of physical exercise; conditioning, self defense and competition Judo.

Judo was developed by Jigoro Kano in the late 1800's in Japan as a way to practice and compete in the martial arts without getting hurt.

We as a club adhere to his values and teachings.

Judo today is practiced around the world and enjoyed by many and is an olympic sport.
